Splash Remake?: Ron Howard’s 1984 Splash was my childhood

Splash Remake?: Ron Howard’s 1984 Splash was my childhood. Discovering mermaids was magical then, and it’s exciting to see it reimagined. I must have rewatched the movie a thousand times because each scene is still fresh in my mind.

The story is about discovering mermaids through a boy’s eyes, leading to a heartwarming love story. The boy falls overboard while on vacation with his parents. The boy doesn’t know how to swim, but a mermaid around his same age rescue him from drowning. When crews grab the boy from the water, the mermaid hides underwater so she isn’t seen. I can’t recall if she gave him breath while underwater to restore his oxygen or not, but the boy is finally scooped up from the water by the boat crews.

The boy is then seen back on the boat wrapped in a towel overlooking the water. For a brief moment, the mermaid resurfaces to wave at the boy; she then dives back into the water and her young mermaid tail makes a splash on the surface quickly before disappearing. This was the first time we see the mermaid’s tail in the movie; it was a playful and magical surprise for the boy and for all audiences.

So, that’s the first scene of the movie Splash that I can recall off the top of my head. Memories are elusive, and such, we sometimes fill in the blanks with new and surprising things. I would need to rewatch the scene to verify everything; I will do this very thing as an experiment in memory. After doing so I will update my post later and write new things in this section ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ‘‰ Five days later and Iโ€™m here to tell you that I had completely forgotten that the beginning of the movie is in black and white. Allen actually jumps in the water, and his brother drops coins on the floor to look up girls’ skirts ๐Ÿ˜‚ The 1984 Splash is so greatโ€ฆIโ€™m glad I gave it another go as an adult. So many quirky and original scenes. โค๏ธEnjoy the rest of this blog post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I vividly recall the opening credits with ‘Woolie Boolie’ by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs playingโ€”it’s an enduring classic. ๐ŸŽถ As the story unfolds, the young boy grows into a man, portrayed by Tom Hanks, and finds himself in yet another precarious situation where he nearly drowns. Yes, once again. Evidently, he has a penchant for shunning floating devices and swimming lessons, yet paradoxically, he revels in water adventures. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The mermaid from his childhood, now portrayed by Daryl Hannah, comes to his rescue once again in his adult life. This time, the man, named ‘Allen,’ accidentally drops his wallet, which Madison, the mermaid, discovers later. With Allen’s wallet as a clue, Madison sets out to find him, leading to the unfolding of a heartwarming and whimsical love story filled with moments of comedy. โค๏ธ

The move “Splash” is a story of an innocent and rare love that is tested by society and social norms. The movie also has John Candy in it, which plays Allen’s half brother. He’s the one that drops coins to look up girls skirts. He never outgrows this habit as he’s shown as an adult doing the same thing. ๐Ÿ˜… Who doesn’t love John Candy?

Something I wanted to mention is that Splash is a movie made by Disney, which surprises me considering one nude scene that is later removed from mainstream. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I know right? So anyhow, they’re doing a remake of Splash. How do you feel about that? The way I found out was because I thought it would be cool if they actually did one…so I googled it. Sure enough, there it was! Splash remake in the works starring Channing Tatum as the mermaid. Say what?! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

You read it correctly, the Splash remake will feature Channing Tatum. Will he actually be the mermaid? Here’s the thing…I read different articles that said different things; one article said he’s playing a merman, and another said he’s playing the mermaid. Well, not just another one; several articles said he’s playing the mermaid. Either mainstream doesn’t know that there’s such a thing as mermen or they’re going for clickbait. So the question begs – will the Splash remake be a gender bender or a gender swap? What is the world ready for when it comes to the world of merpeople?

Whatever Disney thinks we’re ready for when it comes to gender bending and gender swapping seems to involve comedy. If it’s a comedy, Channing Tatum certainly fits the role of merman. Daryl Hannah’s character of “Madison” in the original Splash had naive and somewhat childlike qualities – what you’d expect a mermaid new to society would have; these are the same qualities that Channing Tatum often displays in his comedic films. This might be a good movie!

Let’s hope that the Splash remake will be sprinkled with something totally unexpected, and I don’t mean just comedy, content. The Splash remake might very well open the movie floodgates for merpeople all over. We might get a magical love story sprinkled with humor that gives us a different type of merman – aside from the superhero kind. ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™‚๏ธ In the least, the Splash remake might gives us a bathtub scene sprinkled with some Morton salt. ๐Ÿง‚ ๐Ÿ›€
