Recently, a firsthand experience at a mall and the drive back home fueled my determination to shed light on the damaging impact of the industry’s marketing strategies. From the moment we step out the door or get online, a barrage of ads and reminders telling us that we’re not perfect is waiting for us.

The beauty industry’s continuous promotion of unattainable beauty standards has created a culture of inadequacy and self-doubt among women. From promoting anti-aging products as a “cure” for natural signs of aging to encouraging unrealistic body ideals through deceptive advertising, the industry perpetuates an unending cycle of insecurity and dissatisfaction. Moreover, the troubling reality is that women themselves are often employed to promote these unrealistic standards, resulting in a self-perpetuating cycle of insecurity.

Misleading Marketing Strategies

Let me tell you about the circus I walked into at the mall. Picture this: a 3-hour presentation trying to convince you that a certain over-inflated beauty company has all the solutions to your beauty “problems”, which mostly involve the most natural part of life – aging. And to top it off, the presenter is wearing 10 pounds of make-up. The only thing you have to do to be a regular customer is basically offer up your first-born. As if that wasn’t enough, within the same vicinity as the presentation, there were flyers pushing butt-enhancing undies like they were the solution to life’s problems.

The beauty industry preys on our insecurities, leading us to believe that our natural features are flaws that need to be “fixed”. If we dare to embrace our unique selves, we’re bombarded with ads claiming we’re not living our best life or some other elusive concept. What a load of bull! And what’s worse, our own sisters, fellow women, are there at the forefront, promoting these damaging falsehoods as gospel truth. It’s as if we’re betraying ourselves and each other at the same time.

As if that wasn’t enough, on the way home, I came across an ad on a billboard on the side of the highway. The ad was for some “treatment” or surgery (I can’t recall since I was trying to stay alive by focusing on driving) that was attempting to shame women’s natural frown lines. The frown lines were labeled as the number 11 that must be banished from our faces. This sick gimmick was akin to a modern day scarlet letter – like some unacceptable symbol that marks us as “old”. Ladies, we can and must demand better! This is plain ageism – period.

The impact of this relentless marketing game is no joke. It’s fueling a skyrocketing number of women opting for plastic surgery and sending eating disorder stats through the roof. We’re bombarded left and right with messages insinuating that we should all strive for this so-called perfect look that’s about as natural as a unicorn. A simple outing turns into a minefield of self-doubt and insecurity, with every glance in the mirror magnifying our perceived flaws and imperfections. It doesn’t help that in this digital age, filters are slathered all over social media, reminding us that we need to present this flawless, Insta-worthy version of ourselves. It’s a cycle that never ends, leaving us chasing after an impossible idea of perfection and feeling like we’re constantly falling short
